Deutscher Werkbund (German Association of Craftsman) Exhibition Venice
Old pavilion seen in a new light
The goal and motivation for the »This is modern« exhibition in Venice in 2014, was to reflect on the modern in architecture and to question the self-evidence of the movement.
On the occasion of the 14th Architectural Biennale and the 100th year jubilee of the first Deutsche Werkbund exhibition in Cologne, the Deutsche Werkbund, Berlin created the design task to re-interpret the German Pavilion, which had been classified as dilapidated. Twenty-two well-known German architecture offices presented their plans, sketches, and models, from June to August, in the Renaissance Palazzo Ca’Tron on the Grand Canal. The exhibition offered visitors comparative examination and allowed a view into contemporary methodologies.
As a member of the Deutsche Werkbund, mawa sponsored the lighting and staged walls, displays, and tables with track spotlights from the fbl series. The participation of numerous additional corporate sponsors reflects the aspiration of the association to bring about a »dialogue of disciplines.« Since it’s establishment in 1907, the Werkbund strives to increase joint cooperation between designers, industry, trades, and politics; with the goal to better address social developments and improve quality.
