From 10 to 12 September 2026, “Currents. Design in Berlin”
celebrated its premiere – a new, community-driven design festival
that brought together Berlin’s diverse design scene at numerous venues across the city.
Around 80 participants at some 60 venues turned Berlin into a showcase for contemporary design for three days and nights: in showrooms, studios, workshops, galleries and universities.
mawa was part of this premiere.

As part of this event, the showroom at Tacheles was staged using surface-mounted spotlights from the wittenberg 4.0 range. The lights were used to specifically highlight the carpets by Reuber Henning and emphasise the pieces by Vogel Studio.

The use of untreated raw aluminium for the luminaire housings was particularly remarkable. They showcased the craftsmanship involved in their manufacture whilst blending perfectly into the space, with its exposed concrete ceiling, and the design concept developed by Studio Mara.

“It is in keeping with our approach not to further refine materials, but to showcase them in their purity and texture. This is evident in our use of the ‘wittenberg 4.0’ lighting series by mawa, crafted from raw aluminium for the ‘Currents’ exhibition; the craftsmanship is palpable and blends perfectly into our space.” – translated
Hans-Olaf Schulz, architect and founder of Studio Mara

mawa provided the organisers and partners with advice and practical support, and professionally lit the venue ahead of the event. The event was a complete success, so the use of the showroom was extended beyond the original period.
